Single Review:
Spacetoast | Truncheon-25 + Stranger

Spacetoast are college noisemakers that I am glad I got to hear.
This isn’t your average dead-end college band that plays one show in a classroom at lunch and then never tries to progress, this is a band that are developing their sound; if this is how they sound now give ‘em time and they could be your new favourite thing.
The band have recently released two singles and they are filled with pure noise. When speaking on their music frontman Dan Hewitt says “We try and tell a story with our music while using guitar to engrave our songs into people’s heads.”These are tracks that definitely get into your head, after listening to 'Truncheon-25' it has stayed in my head for the last few days, this is a band that knows how to be catchy.
When speaking on their first single he continues "Truncheon-25 is about wannabes and people that have high hopes of being popular and well-loved and how that all eventually lets them down as they get older."
'Truncheon-25' has energy from the get-go. Recorded in Dan's front room in true DIY style, it's a song that you can't help but feel inclined to move to as instruments clash with each other; all the while quick paced vocals spitting out lines like venom, effortlessly accenting the roar of drums and elegant riffs weaving between the song.
However, out of the two, I would definitely say that their release 'Stranger' is the standout track for me. Dan says "Stranger focuses on how girls can experience some pretty unpleasant guys at parties or clubs and how they have to deal with them and about the sleazy guys that make their nights so uncomfortable for them."
'Stranger' has a slightly more rugged and aggressive tone than its partner 'Truncheon-25' delivering vocal lines that force you to listen to what is being said, this track has that fuck you attitude and relentlessly pours itself out in a swirl of anger and musical intricacy all neatly wrapped up for your consumption.
Spacetoast doesn't need to be confined in a box of one genre and both singles show that they are capable of varying their sound and the way they want to present their art; whether doing that through more upbeat tracks like 'Truncheon-25' or punkier tracks like 'Stranger' it really dosen't matter.
Spacetoast are set to play a sold-out show at The Sunflower Lounge on the 20th February.
