Fiende Fatale| 2020VISION

Words: Owen Stanley

Whilst the rest of the world stood pragmatic with their smartphones out looking to catch the perfect firework shot for their Instagram account as the new year rolled in, one particular group of individuals were under the wraps planning an explosion of their own by the way of music.

London based band Fiende Fatale clearly were not interested in sitting back and waiting to see what 2019 had in store for them.

Merely a year has passed since Matthew Magee (Vocals & Guitar), James Bowman (Bass), Rolph Angelucci-Edwards (Guitar) and Dom Bowman (Drums) began their journey as a four piece and are a fine example of using your time wisely in order to generate the biggest impact possible on the rest of the world.

The band compare themselves to artists including : Idles, Shame and Jamie T and it is clear to see why in their newly released track titled 2020VISION, due to the undeniable carnage and state of panic that the track brings with it; a theme also common within the aforementioned artists arsenal's.

From the first second of the track it is forgivable to think you are trapped in this post apocalyptic world with no escape or hope of salvation ever returning. The constant heart rush and fear of impending dread flows fantastically well throughout, allowing for listeners to almost feel as though they are inside the mind of this track.

Perhaps this feeling is not to dissimilar from life as we know it now, constantly trapped and hidden from reality, days are viewed through a smartphone and the early morning harmonies from nearby birds seems nothing more than a distant memory.

The whole theme of the track is seemingly based around the world`s clear misjudgment and lack of intelligence of what is happening around them. Passively ignoring news headlines regarding climate change, seeing a major and devastating news story then forgetting about it tomorrow; all suggesting a misinterpretation of their priorities. The band sum up all the aforementioned ideals with a simple yet witty line : “This is the way the world ends, Not with a bang but with a balanced breakfast.” Potentially suggesting that the world would rather cater for their typical values rather than push for change.

The London four piece also released a music video to coincide with the track's release. The key for a music video is for it to be appealing to audience and to fit hand in hand with the premise of the song, and this video fits that criteria perfectly. Using mainly stock footage, the band take us through a time vortex so to speak of society and how we have grown for better or worse.

The opening minute focuses on the positives of life with genuine romance and a clear depiction of how to care for one another, this is exhibited through retro 1950-60's cinema, the black and white screens were also a sign that romance was alive and well.

As the video progresses we see the damaging results of civilisations distaste for one another, war upon war, tragedy upon tragedy with many world leaders current and past used almost as a sign to suggest it's not too late to do better, as the band put it : “Wake up! You're alive!"

Fiende Fatal will be looking to continue the year as well as they started it and with the magnitude of this track it`s needless to say it will happen. And remember if you're ever stuck in an apocalypse make sure you have some breakfast first.
