6/2/20

Cosmic Stream is a six track psychedelia laden dive into sparkling jazz riffs and space centred story telling. Based in Leicester, five piece Bubblegum Hypnosis have created a soundscape on this EP that immerses the listener entirely.

Opening track ‘Wormhole’ hits with waves of effects; layered guitars that sonically set the scene for the rest of the cut: atmospheric and dreamy. Title track ‘Cosmic Stream’ showcases the bands’ ability not only musically but lyrically too. Being able to take the listener on a journey through the bands conceptualised galaxy setting proves a valuable asset throughout the entire EP, adding an extra layer of experience to listening to this collection of tracks.

A standout song for me personally was ‘Sphere of Time’. Hypnotic and smooth against the prior track ‘Planetary Boogie’, this song highlights tasteful guitar riffs and delicate vocals that blend together to create an ethereal sound that captures the mood of the entire EP.

Aside from drums, this entire six track collection was recorded and produced by William Chapman in a bedroom.

Creating such a well rounded and captivating sound from one room is no easy feat but they have managed this incredibly well, adding a touch of DIY to a genre that is perhaps not seen to be as independent and self sufficient as some others.

The production on this cut has really allowed Vivek Varia’s songwriting to flourish, with influences from Mild High Club and The Babe Rainbow infused with Varia’s own writing style forming an authentic and exciting sound. With a vast number of gigs under the band’s belt, these will certainly be ones to keep an eye on this year with Cosmic Stream being a great first release of 2020.
