Manchester’s ultimate wavy punk rock upcoming trio, The C33s are a band you cannot let slip under your radar.
With the band now holding a growing fanbase: signing to These Bloody Thieves Records; going on a successful tour with scene favourites Cabbage; playing a joint sold out headline show at The Peer Hat and releasing popular singles such as ‘Manic Depression’ and ‘Big Winner’; not to forget a headline tour set for this autumn as well. With the likes of appearances at The Neighbourhood Festival and Off The Record Festival. The C33s are not going to dissolve anytime soon...
The C33s, formed of Judy Jones (drums, vocals), Cav Green (guitar and vocals) and Ste Phillips (bassist), are a band that are a perfect example of what is happening in the melting pot of Manchester’s music scene right now; highlighting the fact that bands like this aren’t going anywhere.
When speaking outside the doors of The Peer Hat a few months ago, pre-sold out co-headline show, with fellow loud band Cold Water Swimmers, on the bands recent success and their first sold out show, frontman Cav Green says:
“It’s our first sold out show as musicians so it’s an incredible feeling. When you play a sold-out local show, it can be a bit overbearing because there are so many people that you know quite closely; different groups of friends like everyone together”
Continuing on the bands fast growing success Green says:
“It’s grown very fast actually”
With Judy continuing:
“yeah, it’s all grown so fast we only recorded the EP last July, so it’s not even been a year yet.”
With Green adding:
“Yeah, in 11 months we’ve managed to play a sold out show, get on a tour with Cabbage which we’re so grateful for because that definitely did stuff for us and then playing King Tut’s already, that was a dream venue. A lot of boxes have been ticked for this band quite quickly. So, we’ll only be going two years by the looks of things! With the heroin overdoses next week haha.’’
Well, we can safely say that there were no 70’s style heroin overdoses from the band the following week, that we know of, but what we can say is that the sold out show was a huge success and not a soul in that sweaty basement was standing still with a performance that could kill, a touch of swagger about it.
When speaking on the bands recent signing with independent record label These Bloody Thieves Records and how it came about Green says:
“It just came about, Rob (Hirst) liked what he heard, and our manager had a few conversations as far as I know. No blackmails or anything it was quite a clean deal. It’s great, just that little bit of help makes all the difference you know and as a band you want to be stood behind your instruments not behind a laptop, so it really helps.”
Hailing from Manchester The C33s are engulfed by the music scene and its bands. When speaking on their local scene and being at, as I said the forefront of the music scene, or as Cav corrected me, "the front of the music" scene not the forefront. Green says:
“Manchester’s always going to have that good local scene. A lot of the time it’s centred on a 19 year old indie vibe. It’s something that without a doubt will come up around every 5 years within the music industry. I feel like at the moment in Manchester there’s more of a focus on other kinds of bands now, it’s absolutely incredible. There’s a lot of fucking fast angry bands coming out at the moment like Strange Bones and Cabbage. There’s loads of great fucking loud bands at the moment.”
The C33s are on a wave of exciting revived new noise that everybody needs to be on; with the band gaining speed, when speaking about future projects Green says:
“So, we have a single out next month that we recorded in Birmingham with Gary Monahan (Big Winner, out now!) then obviously festival season and as I said then comes the overdoses and the fights and stuff, the real crisis. That will all be early next year. ''
Of course, as we do with most of the bands, we get to chat to, we gave the band an opportunity to end the interview in any way they liked in which Green says with all the purpose of a door to door salesman:
“There’s only one thing worse than a dead hippie and that’s a living one.”
