In Conversation | Petrol Boys

We caught up with Peterborough loud band Petrol Boys a couple months ago about their local scene, supporting Ladybird on tour and all their current musical goings on. Here's what happened when we got chatting to Joe (drums, vocals), Shaun (bass, vocals), and Isaac (guitar, vocals).

Get to know them and catch them this Saturday at The Soundhouse.

The band are supporting Ladybird on tour tonight how are you guys feeling about that and how did it come about?

We're really looking forward to it, it's a big step for us and we're playing with bands we actually want to, not just playing the gig for the point of it. We're big fans of Ladybird so really blessed to be playing this show.

It came about by mostly Joe and our mate emailing people, we just sent emails out really and thankfully we got a reply. We've been hustling ya know. Ladybird put out a poster that they wanted local bands supporting them on tour and I think that's really sick. Thankfully we got on bill.

Petrol Boys released an EP this summer, how was the launch?

The launch was amazing we had a sold out crowd and the people who came were really digging it. We had three amazing local bands, we had spherical who are into their indie/post punk , Sprainer who do really good skate punk and Novastatus who were putting us on when we first started.

The process of recording was a bit long because we went with a guy that has a recording studio in his house. It was very much a day at a time and it ended up taking a couple months to record, but we were happy with it in the end. The Ep launch was an important day for us because it meant we had a proper body of work out. I think i was in the shower before the launch listening to Black Flag and having a little cry to myself.

Selling out our hometown was a big thing for us especially because we are a relatively new band. The funny thing is we did play absolutely shocking that gig but because the crowd still loved it, it was a good night.

How do you feel about your local scene at the moment?

The local bands, there are some good bands. The thing with Peterborough is that it is very dead, there's a very good punk community. Some of the bands aren't exactly like us which can be a good thing because we are so diverse. There's not really a big scene. There's a place called the met, but we refuse to play there.

There is a community in Peterborough but i would say that we do better in Stamford. The best venues in Peterborough are probably pubs. Shout out The Ostrich pub in Peterborough that's our home, they're good with putting on live music. We're trying to do what we can, but you do have to go find it. I think the best thing to do is branch out. I think it is such a welcoming scene. The punk scene are so very nice to us, you have to support your scene.

What can we see from Petrol Boys in the future?

I think the important thing is to branch out and keep doing what we're doing, going to new cities and that. Hopefully building a small following. In terms of recording we're hoping to have some new music out in 2020. I think driving is the next step because we need to get around the country.

We would have had a driver if somebody hadn't failed their test, that somebody is me.

He tried his best though!

I think the future is going to be exciting for us, in the last 18 months i think we've really developed our sound and figured out how to work together and get the best out of our musical capabilities really.

You can end this interview anyway you want, first thing that comes to your head, go!

Support your local scene, don't follow the mainstream and follow yourself. Support independent.
